about

From the sessions which produced Jinnouchi Power’s last video and single, “Calamity,” and which will soon produce the full-length Kaleidokoi, now comes an old-school two-sided single with a lot to say.

“Feb. 10” is the exploration of the emotions surrounding the loss of a pet, in this case bandleader Patrick MacCready’s cat Goof, who left the mortal plane in 2014. The bare bones of the song were written around that time, but it wasn’t until last year when the pieces clicked into place for the full band and the song became the emotionally turbulent pop powerhouse that it is now. Throughout the song’s narrative, the listener can track the progress of grief. In the first verse MacCready sings, “a bag of organs and blood/coagulates in a shoebox by my chair.” This grotesque image demonstrates his unwillingness or inability to let go of the physical remains of this relationship. The true moment of catharsis, as with many things, is in acceptance. In the third verse, MacCready believes that Goof is “finally at peace” and pictures him as a joyful angel ascending into kitty heaven.

“Friends” is a celebration not just of friendship as a concept, but of the joy in attending and playing shows in a local scene. As a foil to the sadness and grief manifested in “Feb. 10,” “Friends” stands as an opportunity to revel in community, excitement, exhilaration, and good old rock and roll. After all, what could be more joyful than screaming, “I love it!” at the top of your lungs?
